Best Deals

Hosted by Alan Mendelson -- Featured on KCAL-9

BUTCH IN CANOGA PARK WRITES:  "Alan you talk a lot about Las Vegas. There are so many 'deals' with hotels and air packages I don't know where to start. Is it better to buy a package or just drive? Also where really is the
best deal for a buffet?"

Thanks for the email, and wow that's a lot of information you are asking for!

First of all, driving or flying is a personal choice with a lot of factors.  Frankly, I find it easier to drive than to go to LAX or Burbank Airport early, go through security, wait for a plane, and then do it all over again for the trip home from Vegas.  I also like the freedom that driving gives me and my wife -- we don't have to follow the airline's schedule.  Don't forget about the added cost of taking a taxi to and from the airport in Vegas, and don't forget about the cost of parking either at the airports here in So Cal.

I'm not much of a buffet person in Vegas because I don't eat that much.  I'm always on a diet, but I'm told that some of the buffets at the Station Casinos' resorts including Green Valley Ranch give you a lot of bang for the buck.

I've had the seafood buffet at The Rio, but frankly my wife and I were disappointed by the selection and quality.

Should you buy a "package" for your Vegas visit?  I can't answer that except to say you have to "price it out."  By all means go with a "budget," but take the time to make some phone calls for room rates.  One warning: Vegas is not as "cheap" as it used to be.  The era of $10 buffets, $10 shows, and $20 rooms is over.

- THANKS, ALAN

TTLANA IN LAKEWOOD WRITES: "I often hear you refer to the 'alley in the valley'. Just where is it?"

Thanks for your email.  It is on Reseda Boulevard, north of the 101 Freeway exit, in the southeast corner of Reseda at Oxnard Streets.   It is an actual "alley" behind the row of stores at Reseda and Oxnard.  When you stop in to the various discounters there, please say "hello" for me.

- THANKS, ALAN

CHAE IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD WRITES:  "Stumpled on your show amd I was hooked for a half hour. Wonder if you have any deals for large size clothing for women."

Yes, Susie's Deals has a large selection of $5 clothing for women, and from time to time I've seen large size clothing at My Fair Lady in Tarzana.  To find Susie's Deals go to our "Previous Shows" link on the home page and you will find them listed on Show #1.  Or use this information:

Susie's Deals
2018 Atlantic Blvd.
Monterey Park, CA 91754
323-722-1069
http://www.susiesdeals.com/

And My Fair Lady is in the Alley In The Valley discount shopping area at the intersection of Reseda Boulevard and Oxnard Street in Tarzana.  The "alley" is located in the southeast corner behind a strip mall at that intersection.  Look for the sign on Reseda Boulevard, and do tell them "hello" for me.

- THANKS, ALAN

ED IN CASTAIC WRITES:  "Went to Superco website. Unable to surf it due to the fact it is not in English. Your show is great, a lot of information in a half hour."

Yes, we were surprised as well to find that Superco's web site is not in English.  Superco has a large Asian customer base and they came to us to help grow their business.  We think we are helping them.  The Superco video was one of the most-watched videos on our site after our TV show was on KCAL9.  There is a written summary of the Superco video in our TIPS section and I hope that will help you get more information.  Superco's phone number is also listed in the show summary page.  Hopefully, they will have an English version of their web site for their new customers.

- THANKS, ALAN

KAREN IN SANTA MONICA WRITES:  "I love your show on TV and discovered your web site (I bookmarked it). I visit it once a week for your tips and alerts. I am curious though, why so many reports on Las Vegas? I am more interested on "deals" in the LA area. Thank you."

Thank you for your comment and email.  We have a lot of articles on Las Vegas for several reasons.  First, Vegas is a prime destinantion for many in Southern California who want a quick vacation.  Second, Southern Cal is a prime market for businesses there, and nearly half of the visitors to Vegas come from SoCal.  I hope that in the future you will find some help, tips and advice in our Vegas articles that will help you.  Thanks for finding us and bookmarking our site.

- THANKS, ALAN

ANN OF NEWPORT BEACH WRITES:  "Watched your show about the pallets of toys around christmas, great ideas regarding the wholesale and resale on ebay. As an ex-mortgage broker I am looking for the next direction of real estate to utilize my knowledge possibly in the foreclosure/hard money marketplace, do you have any sugguestions?"

Thanks for your viewer comment.  The wholesaler that sells pallets of merchandise that can be used for eBay sales is Via Trading in Vernon and they are at 2750 S. Alameda St. and their phone number is 877-202-3616.  Please mention Best Deals when you go there as extra discounts for our viewers are available.

As you know I write frequently about real estate in the Tips and Alerts sections of our web site.  I don't think that there will be a massive wave of foreclosures, but I do think the market will slow and prices will moderate.  I do not think there will be a crash.

I think the "hard money" play for now is in gold and silver bullion and coins, and if you watched my news reports on KCAL over the years, you will know that I have been a big "fan" of gold and silver, and my predictions about rising prices for gold and silver have been directly "on target" over the past four years.  I think the metals will move higher.  I told a friend of mine who has a retail store that he should start selling one ounce gold and silver coins at his cash register.  I gave him that advice more than a year ago, and had he followed it, he would have made some substantial profits by now, just one year later.

But please keep in mind, there is risk with the metals.  I was around "in the market" in the early 1980s when gold and silver prices collapsed.  Be careful.

- THANKS, ALAN

TONY IN PASADENA WRITES:  "The piece on WestsideRentals.com was great! I used the service for negotiating leverage and got major concessions from my existing landlord -- and I didn't have to move!"

We are always pleased to hear that a viewer used one of the companies or services we profiled and got great results.  Many thanks, Tony.  Don't forget to use our SEARCH feature on our home page in the "welcome box" to find other companies that might be able to help you.

- THANKS, ALAN

DAVID IN WEST HOLLYWOOD WRITES: "A year or two ago I saw a segment on KCAL about used clothing stores for high end clothes & accessories. My wife wants a Coach or Gucci bag, but doesn't want to pay top dollar. She also doesn't want to get a cheap knockoff that will fall apart in a year. Please let me know the names of the stores. I believe one was in Beverly Hills and one in Hollywood, on Melrose, perhaps. Thanks!"

Well, those stores were in business a couple of years ago, and frankly I don't know if they are still in business.  There is a handbag store in the Alley In The Valley, off Reseda Boulevard, just south of Oxnard Street in Tarzana.  Please mention me when you go there.

- THANKS, ALAN

JEFFREY B. IN WEST HOLLYWOOD WRITES:  "I am paying my landlords mortage payment with this insane rent. I was looking at all the building in downtown LA or Long Beach. Where are the real real estate DEALS?"
