5/12/2008 - THE BAKER GAS TRAP

Everybody knows that the gas stations in Baker, California, along the 15 Freeway on the route between Southern California and Las Vegas is notorious for high pump prices.  It is a gas trap.  If you don't fill up in Vegas before heading south, or if you don't have enough gas and didn't stop in Victorville or Barstow, you could be stuck paying very high prices in Baker.

Well, over Mothers Day Weekend we made the trip from Los Angeles to Vegas and we stopped in Baker not to buy gas -- but to check the prices.

Yep, Baker still has sky high prices, but with pump prices at $4.00 a gallon in Los Angeles, the pump prices do not seem so high.  In fact, if you shop closely you can actually find a deal in Baker.

Here are the prices on Sunday, and keep in mind these prices can change for better or worse:

At the Shell at the north end of town, near the Arbys, regular was priced at $4.20 and premium was at $4.40.  I rounded the fraction of a cent (.9) in all prices to the next whole cent.  Why gas stations continue to post prices with a point-9 is silly, don't you think?

At the Volero across the street from the Shell regular was at $4.10 and premium was at $4.30.

The 76 station in the middle of town was charging $4.30 for regular and $4.50 for premium -- the highest prices we saw.

The deal is at the ARCO where regular was priced at a bargain price of $3.84 and premium was only $4.10.  Heck, those are lower prices than I see in Los Angeles.

The Chevron which is perhaps the busiest gas station in Baker because of its location charges $4.10 for regular and $4.33 for premium.

And then there is the Shell that is just before the southbound freeway on ramp at the southern end of Baker and it charges $4.00 for regular and $4.40 for premium.

Yes, gas prices all over Vegas are much lower than any pump price in Baker, and a lot lower than Los Angeles pump prices as well.  I filled up my car with premium on Flamingo at Terribles gas station, which is across the street from Palms Casino and I paid $3.86 per gallon.

If you drive about a half mile from the Strip in Vegas you can find even cheaper gas prices.
